ancient Greece
Birthplace of democracy
Ancient Greece refers to the Greek-speaking civilization centered on the Aegean Sea, roughly from the 8th century BCE through the Roman conquest in 146 BCE.
The term encompasses the city-states, culture, philosophy, art, and political innovations of that era: Ancient Greece gave us democracy, the Olympics, and Western philosophy.
Often used attributively: ancient Greece history, ancient Greece mythology. (Capitalized Ancient Greece is interchangeable.)
