economics
The dismal science
Economics is the study of how societies allocate scarce resources—how goods and services are produced, distributed, and consumed.
The field divides into microeconomics (individual choices, markets, firms) and macroeconomics (national output, unemployment, inflation).
As a modifier, economic describes things relating to the economy: economic growth, economic policy.
The plural form economics takes a singular verb when referring to the discipline: Economics is called the dismal science.
