Dionysus

Greek wine god

Dionysus is the Greek god of wine, fertility, ritual madness, and ecstasy.

Son of Zeus and the mortal Semele, he represents intoxication, theatrical performance, and the dissolution of boundaries between human and divine.

His worship involved frenzied rites and revelry.

The Roman equivalent is Bacchus.

The festival had a Dionysian atmosphere.
