stadium

Tiered seating structure

A stadium is a large outdoor venue for sporting events and concerts, typically oval or horseshoe-shaped with tiered seating surrounding a central field or stage.

The word comes from an ancient Greek unit of distance—about 600 feet—which became the name for the track where footraces were held.

Modern stadiums seat tens of thousands: The stadium was packed for the championship game.
