dialectic
Thesis meets antithesis
Dialectic is a method of arriving at truth through structured argument—typically by examining opposing viewpoints and working toward resolution.
In philosophy, it refers to various traditions: Socratic questioning that exposes contradictions, Hegelian synthesis of thesis and antithesis, Marxist analysis of historical forces in conflict.
More loosely, dialectic describes any tension between opposing ideas or forces: the dialectic between tradition and innovation.
The adjective dialectical appears in phrases like dialectical materialism and dialectical reasoning.
