polis

Ancient Greek settlement

Polis is an ancient Greek city-state, the basic political unit of classical Greece.

Athens, Sparta, and Corinth were each a polis.

The term appears in discussions of ancient history and political philosophy, where the polis represents an early model of civic organization and democratic participation.

The plural is poleis.

Aristotle believed humans were naturally suited to life in the polis.
