frieze

Ornamental wall band

A frieze is a horizontal decorative band, especially the middle section of a classical entablature between the architrave and cornice.

More broadly, any ornamental strip along the upper part of a wall qualifies: The frieze depicted scenes from Greek mythology.

The word also applies to heavy woolen cloth with a napped surface, though this sense is rare.
