Columns encircling space
A peristyle is a row of columns surrounding a building, courtyard, or open space, or the space enclosed by such columns.
The term appears most often in descriptions of ancient Greek and Roman architecture: The villa's peristyle garden provided a shaded retreat from the Mediterranean sun.
