amphora

Two-handled storage vessel

An amphora is a tall ancient Greek or Roman jar with two handles and a narrow neck, used for storing and transporting wine, oil, or grain.

The distinctive shape—wide body tapering to a point at the bottom—allowed amphorae to be stacked in ship holds or stood upright in sand.

Archaeological finds of amphorae help scholars trace ancient trade routes.

The plural is either amphorae or amphoras.
