columns

Temple structural elements

Columns are vertical structural supports—pillars holding up a building or monument.

The term extends to anything arranged vertically: a column of soldiers marching in formation, a column of numbers in a spreadsheet, or a column of text on a page.

In newspapers and magazines, a column is also a regular feature by a particular writer: She writes a weekly advice column.
