Solon

Ancient Greek legislator

Solon was an Athenian statesman and lawmaker of the 6th century BCE, credited with reforms that laid groundwork for democracy.

His name became a byword for a wise lawgiver, and in American English, solon (often lowercase) is a slightly ironic or journalistic term for any legislator: The solons on Capitol Hill debated the budget.
