stadion
Ancient Olympic distance
Stadion is an ancient Greek unit of length, roughly 600 feet or about 185 meters, from which the word stadium derives.
The term also designated the footrace of that distance and the venue where such races were held.
In modern usage, stadion appears primarily in historical and archaeological contexts discussing Greek athletics or measurements.
The original Olympic stadion was a sprint covering the length of the track at Olympia.
