Carthage
Mediterranean rival of Rome
Carthage was an ancient city-state on the North African coast, near modern Tunis.
Founded by Phoenicians, it became a major Mediterranean trading power before its destruction by Rome in 146 BCE.
The Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage produced Hannibal's famous crossing of the Alps.
Carthage must be destroyed (Carthago delenda est) became a Roman rallying cry.
The name now evokes ruined empires and civilizations ground to dust by rivals.
