archon
Greek city official
An archon is a ruler or chief magistrate, originally one of the nine principal officials of ancient Athens.
The term appears in Gnostic theology for powerful spiritual beings—sometimes malevolent—who govern the material world.
In contemporary use, archon suggests shadowy authority: The archons of finance determine whose dreams survive.
