Pericles
Golden Age Athenian
Pericles was an Athenian statesman and general of the fifth century BCE, the dominant figure during Athens's golden age.
His name is associated with the flourishing of Athenian democracy, architecture, and culture—the Parthenon was built under his leadership.
The *Periclean Age* or *Age of Pericles* refers to this period of cultural achievement.
His funeral oration, recorded by Thucydides, remains a touchstone for democratic ideals.
