pediment

Portico's triangular crown

A pediment is the triangular gable forming the end of a roof, especially the low-pitched triangular section above the columns on the front of classical Greek and Roman temples.

The form became a standard element of neoclassical architecture—courthouses, banks, and government buildings often feature pediments to suggest authority and permanence.

In geology, a pediment is a gently sloping bedrock surface at the base of a mountain, shaped by erosion.
