stoa

Ancient covered walkway

A stoa is a covered walkway or portico in ancient Greek architecture, typically a long building with columns along one side opening onto a public space.

Stoas lined marketplaces and civic centers, providing shelter for merchants, philosophers, and citizens.

The Stoic school of philosophy took its name from the Stoa Poikile (Painted Stoa) in Athens where Zeno taught.
