poles

Earth's icy endpoints

Poles are the opposite ends of an axis—the North and South Poles of Earth, the positive and negative poles of a battery or magnet.

By extension, poles represent extremes of any spectrum: The candidates are poles apart on immigration.

A pole is also a long stick or post: telephone poles, fishing poles, tent poles.

To pole is to propel with a pole, as when punting a boat. (Capitalized Poles are people from Poland.)
