hemisphere

Half a sphere

A hemisphere is half of a sphere—any globe-shaped object divided in two.

Most commonly, the word refers to halves of Earth: the Northern and Southern Hemispheres (divided by the equator) or the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

In anatomy, the brain's two cerebral hemispheres control opposite sides of the body: a stroke in the left hemisphere.
