axis
Line of rotation
An axis is an imaginary straight line around which something rotates or is symmetrically arranged.
The Earth spins on its axis once every twenty-four hours.
In geometry and graphs, axes are reference lines used to locate points in space: the x-axis and y-axis of a coordinate plane.
The word extends to any central line or organizing principle: the axis of a debate.
In World War II, the Axis referred to Germany, Italy, Japan, and their allies.
