stake
Pointed ground marker
A stake is a pointed piece of wood or metal driven into the ground—for support, boundary marking, or tying something to.
To stake a plant is to secure it upright.
To stake a claim is to assert ownership, from the practice of marking land boundaries.
Stakes are also what you wager in a bet or risk in an enterprise: The stakes are too high.
When the stakes are raised, more is at risk.
To have a stake in something is to have an interest in its outcome.
To stake someone is to provide them with money or resources: She staked him to a new set of tools.
