Solidarity

Gdańsk shipyard movement

Solidarity was the independent trade union movement founded in Poland in 1980, led by Lech Wałęsa.

It became the first non-communist trade union in a Soviet-bloc country and played a pivotal role in ending communist rule in Poland.

The movement's success inspired democratic movements across Eastern Europe. (Lowercase solidarity is unity or mutual support.)
