Heart of something
All of the many meanings of center (centre in British English) take their cue from the core meaning: the middle point that is equidistant from the edges of a circle or sphere.
Center may designate an athlete who plays a central position, the inner part of an object (chocolates with nougat centers), or an intermediate point (as in politics) that is between right and left.
Buildings and other places characterized as centers are hubs of a particular activity, such as a shopping center or a recreation center. When you center something, you put it in the middle.
