cast

Actors in production

Cast, a busy and complex word, is most frequent as a verb literally meaning throw (cast a fishing line) and figuratively, cause to be felt or present (cast doubt, cast a shadow, cast a spell).

Noun meanings are also extremely varied and many of them have an associated, specific verb meaning.

The cast of a play or movie consists of the actors in it.

When you cast a film, you choose these people.

A cast is also something formed by molding (a copper cast of the statue), and to cast something is to mold it: The company cast a bell for city hall.

A protective covering for a broken limb is also called a cast; the medical professional casts the limb.
