magnetite
Iron oxide mineral
Magnetite is a black iron oxide mineral that is naturally magnetic—one of the few minerals with this property.
It occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks and is a major source of iron ore.
Lodestone, a naturally magnetized form of magnetite, was humanity's first encounter with magnetism and led to the development of the compass.
