jump

Leave the ground

Jump characterizes quick movement, usually self-propelled, vertically or horizontally.

You can jump overboard or jump ahead.

A jump is an instance of jumping.

Figurative use extends to quick movement in time or thought (jump back to ten years ago, jump from one topic to another) or on a scale (jump in prices).

Phrasal verbs with jump usually suggest suddenness: jump at an opportunity means respond to it with enthusiasm; to jump on someone is to criticize them sharply, perhaps unexpectedly.
