clearance
Space to pass
Clearance is permission or authorization to proceed—security clearance grants access to classified information, clearance to land allows a plane to touch down.
The word also means the space between objects: The bridge has twelve feet of clearance.
In retail, clearance refers to selling off inventory at reduced prices: clearance sale, on clearance.
To clear customs or obtain official approval is to get clearance.
