electromagnet
Current-activated magnet
An electromagnet is a magnet created by running electric current through a coiled wire, typically wrapped around an iron core.
Unlike permanent magnets, electromagnets can be switched on and off and their strength adjusted by varying the current.
They power everything from doorbells and MRI machines to junkyards cranes that lift scrap metal.
