foundations
What buildings stand on
Foundations are the underlying bases on which structures rest—literally the concrete or stone footings of buildings, figuratively the fundamental principles supporting ideas or institutions: the foundations of democracy, a course covering the foundations of computer science.
A foundation is also an organization established to fund charitable or research activities, typically with an endowment: the Gates Foundation, a private foundation.
In cosmetics, foundation is the base layer applied before other makeup.
