trekking
Wilderness trail journey
Trekking is long-distance hiking, typically through rugged or remote terrain over multiple days: We spent two weeks trekking through the Himalayas.
The word suggests more arduous travel than ordinary hiking—carrying gear, camping, and covering significant ground.
More casually, trekking describes any effortful journey: I'm not trekking all the way across town for coffee.
