engine house

Where trains sleep

An engine house is a building that shelters engines or engine-operated equipment.

The term most commonly refers to a fire station, where fire engines are kept ready for dispatch: The old engine house has been converted into a restaurant.

Historically, engine houses also housed stationary steam engines for pumping water or powering industrial machinery.
