neutral zone
Demilitarized buffer area
A neutral zone is an area where opposing forces are prohibited or where conflict is suspended.
In sports, it's the space between teams before play begins—the middle of an ice hockey rink or the area between scrimmage lines in football.
More broadly, any buffer space separating antagonistic parties: The demilitarized zone served as a neutral zone between the two countries. (Capitalized Neutral Zone appears in Star Trek.)
