poling

Propelling craft by push-stick

Poling is propelling a boat by pushing a long pole against the bottom of shallow water—the method used for punts and rafts.

The term extends to any work done with poles: poling for oysters, poling up a fence.

In skiing, poling refers to the pushing motion made with ski poles to gain speed on flat terrain.
