equator
Sphere's middle circle
The equator is an imaginary line circling Earth at its widest point, equidistant from the North and South Poles.
It divides the planet into Northern and Southern Hemispheres and marks zero degrees latitude.
Countries on the equator experience roughly equal day and night year-round.
The term extends to similar lines on other celestial bodies or any central dividing line: the celestial equator.
