crossbar

Goalposts' linking beam

A crossbar is a horizontal bar connecting two upright posts or supports.

In sports, it's the bar joining the goalposts in football, soccer, or hockey—a shot that hits the crossbar narrowly misses: The ball struck the crossbar and bounced away.

Bicycles have a crossbar connecting the seat post to the handlebars.

Any horizontal structural element bridging two verticals may be called a crossbar.
