reel

Stagger after shock

A reel is a cylinder or spool around which something flexible is wound: a fishing reel, a reel of thread, a film reel.

To reel is to wind onto such a device, or to draw in by winding: He reeled in a twelve-pound bass.

To reel off facts is to recite them quickly.

Separately, to reel is to stagger or sway as if drunk or dizzy: She reeled from the blow.

The mind reels when overwhelmed.

A reel is also a lively folk dance, especially Scottish or Irish, or the music for it.
