latitude
Distance from equator
Latitude is distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees from 0° at the equator to 90° at the poles.
Lines of latitude circle the globe horizontally, parallel to the equator.
The word extends to mean freedom or scope for action: The teacher gave students considerable latitude in choosing their topics.
This figurative sense suggests room to move within boundaries, like the range of positions between equator and pole.
