Gdansk

Baltic Sea city

Gdańsk is a major port city on Poland's Baltic coast, at the mouth of the Vistula River.

Known historically as Danzig under German rule, the city's contested status helped trigger World War II when Germany demanded its return.

Today it is Poland's principal seaport and a center of shipbuilding—the birthplace of the Solidarity movement that helped end Communist rule in Eastern Europe.
