vault

Bank's protected room

Vault has two sets of meanings, each represented by a noun and verb.

In the first, a vault is a structure or open space that forms an arch at the top.

It may be underground.

From this arises a more general use of a room where something is kept securely (bank vault), or any underground chamber (wine vault).

A roof or ceiling that is vaulted is arched.

In the second, to vault is to leap high into the air, or over something: The gymnast vaulted over the beam.

A vault is an instance of this.
