mast

Vertical nautical timber

A mast is a tall vertical pole on a ship or boat that supports sails and rigging.

The word extends to any tall upright structure: a radio mast, a flag mast.

Separately, mast refers to nuts from forest trees—acorns, beechnuts, chestnuts—that accumulate on the ground and feed wildlife: a good mast year for the oaks.
