barber poles
Spinning shop signs
Barber poles are the striped cylindrical signs mounted outside barbershops, traditionally featuring red, white, and blue helical stripes that appear to move when the pole rotates.
The design dates to when barbers also performed surgery—red for blood, white for bandages.
Beyond barbershops, barber pole describes any similar spiral pattern: barber pole lighting on the runway, a barber pole candy cane.
