Jacob's later name
Israel is a country in the Middle East on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, established in 1948 as a homeland for the Jewish people.
It holds profound religious significance for Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, containing sites sacred to all three faiths.
The term also refers to the Jewish people collectively, deriving from the biblical patriarch Jacob, who was renamed Israel.
Israel has been central to Middle East geopolitics for decades.
In the Hebrew Bible, Israel designated both the patriarch's descendants and their ancient kingdom.
