mezuzah

Jewish doorway marker

A mezuzah is a small case containing a parchment inscribed with Hebrew verses from Deuteronomy, affixed to the doorframes of Jewish homes.

The word means "doorpost" in Hebrew.

Observant Jews touch or kiss the mezuzah when passing through a doorway.

The case is mounted at an angle on the right side of the entrance.

Plural: mezuzot or mezuzahs.
