Temple Mount
Sacred Jerusalem hill
The Temple Mount is a sacred site in Jerusalem's Old City, a raised platform where the Jewish Temples once stood.
It remains Judaism's holiest place, though Jewish law restricts access to certain areas.
The site is also sacred to Muslims, who call it al-Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary) and revere it as where Muhammad ascended to heaven.
The Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque now stand there.
Competing claims make it among the world's most contested religious sites: Tensions flared again at the Temple Mount.
