Israelites

Ancient Promised Land seekers

Israelites are the ancient Hebrew people descended from the patriarch Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel.

In biblical narrative, they were the twelve tribes who escaped Egyptian bondage, wandered the desert, and settled in Canaan.

The term appears in historical and religious contexts: The Israelites crossed the Red Sea.

Modern usage distinguishes Israelites (the ancient people) from Israelis (citizens of the modern state of Israel).
