mitzvah

Jewish religious obligation

A mitzvah is a commandment or good deed in Jewish tradition.

The Torah contains 613 mitzvot (plural), covering religious obligations and ethical conduct.

In casual use, mitzvah often just means a kind act or favor: It would be a mitzvah if you could check on her.

A bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah is the coming-of-age ceremony marking when a Jewish child becomes responsible for observing the commandments.
