shrine

Pilgrimage destination site

A shrine is a place considered sacred, often containing relics or dedicated to a deity, saint, or spirit.

Pilgrims visit shrines to pray, seek healing, or pay homage: the shrine at Lourdes, a roadside shrine to the Virgin Mary.

The word extends to any place treated with special reverence: His office became a shrine to his late father, fans turned the crash site into a shrine.
