Lebanon
Levantine Mediterranean country
Lebanon is a small country on the eastern Mediterranean coast, bordered by Syria and Israel.
Historically a crossroads of civilizations, it's known for its complex religious and ethnic diversity—Maronite Christians, Sunni and Shia Muslims, Druze, and others share power through a confessional political system.
Beirut, the capital, was once called the "Paris of the Middle East" before civil war (1975–1990) devastated the country.
The explosion in Lebanon's port shocked the world.
