ancient Israel
Old Testament realm
Ancient Israel refers to the Hebrew-speaking civilization that existed in the Levant from roughly the late second millennium BCE through the Roman period, centered on the kingdoms of Israel and Judah.
The term encompasses both a geographic region and the people who inhabited it, whose religious and cultural traditions form the foundation of Judaism and, by extension, Christianity and Islam.
Ancient Israel developed monotheism and produced the texts that became the Hebrew Bible.
