pogrom
Ethnic cleansing riot
A pogrom is an organized massacre or violent persecution of an ethnic group, historically most often Jews in Russia and Eastern Europe.
The word comes from Russian, meaning "to wreak havoc." Pogroms were typically mob attacks sanctioned or ignored by authorities, involving murder, destruction of property, and looting: The pogroms of the late 19th century drove millions of Jews to emigrate.
The term now applies to any systematic violent attack on a minority group.
